There were some changes to the NID detection recently, so it might make sense
to try a snapshot:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules - can you please
do that and retry, and report back if everything is now working?
Also if you're not the original bug reporter, also
crack of the day fixes it -- both internal speakers and headphone socket
working -- Compaq CQ62

I did a fresh install of 10.4 on an HP dv8, I have no sound whatsoever.
If this is not resolved within 24 hours, I will find a different
distribution. I have tried every suggestion I found.

Since external speaker worked and internal does not, I suspect it
could be a configuration problem ie, kernel + userspace component all
okso how about this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9488763
For your case:
1. copy the conf file out (since u have installed the backports.
2.
Daniel, I had downloaded and run the HDA analyzer script from http://www
.alsa-project.org/hda-analyzer.py on the current Lucid kernel.

Using HDA analyzer and changing its options to generate this diff helps.
However, this doesn't persist across reboots and it simply doesn't give
a good user-experience.
