And the same issue comes up with Ubuntu 10.10, at least with the live CD. I can't believe no one has bothered to fix this bug in the past 18 months. I assume there is not a problem with WPA encryption, but I'd like to believe there are enough users with that very commonplace wireless card

I have a similar problem. I have a Dell Mini 9 which connected just fine to a network with WPA just fine, but refuses to connect to my home network with 128bit WEP password. Network Manager acts like it joined the network, but it claims to be unable to get a DHCP response. -- 10.04 (and 9.10)
