As I have now solved the issue which I believe was due to an incorrect
configuration (due to my hack to install a later ubuntu version than is
supported by my cpu) it doesn't make sense for me to open a bug report

Having looked into this further I am willing to suggest a solution for those
affected and can say that I don't think it is a problem with
xserver-xorg-video-ati but is due to the kernel that is in use. After doing a
full install of Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) Daily Build and

Keith Moyer, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

Just adding my interest to this bug. I see there's been no movement
since June 2010 but I am still affected every day. I want to suspend my
poor little laptop who has now been running for about a year without a
break :)

Downgrading the kernel further didn't help.
It's only the screen that's blank - the keyboard is fine. In other words, I can
do a CTRL-ALT-F1 and although the screen stays blank, I can log in and shut
