It won't load for me - a brief window, then closes again. Same thing
when I try to open a document with evince. Adobe reader is not affected.

I just installed Maverick alpha and had this. The error message made
sense to me and I fixed it like this:
mkdir ~/.gnome2/evince
touch ~/.gnome2/evince/last_settings

update to evince-common_2.30.3-0ubuntu3 with apparmor changes gave me a
thought. dmesg output with evince/apparmor errors in the attached file.
Please consider that my FS layout:
/dev/sda1 on /media type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
/home is a symlink:
