This seems to be a general Ubuntu problem and is not related to Kubuntu alone. By now I tried all Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu, i386 and amd64 versions. However, I succeeded installing Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 using the ALTERNATE installer. Thus my best guess is that the problem is related to the graphics system somehow.
