Then, my printer driver installed (brother-cups-wrapper-laser1). This was very weird. It may have had something to do with trying to follow these directions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=278923 I deemed those too old and abandoned them, but maybe I did something to install that mfc8840dlpr while I was messing around with it. I'll give this driver from the repository a shot and see where that gets me.
