the local here: /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/tables-2.1.2-py2.6-linux-i686.egg/tables/__init__.py means you are using a custom installation of pytables not the ubuntu version. the ubuntu version is correctly using hdf 1.8.4 ** Changed in: pytables (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid
