means you are using a custom installation of pytables not the ubuntu version.
the ubuntu version is correctly using hdf 1.8.4

Update: Manually downloading and installing the package
libhdf5-serial-1.6.6-0_1.6.6-4ubuntu2_i386.deb seems to be sufficient as
a workaround to make pytables work until this issue is fixed.
