Alsamixer showed that the speaker was turned all the way down.
Additionally, pulseaudio was not running. I fixed this by running
pulseaudio -D and turning up the speaker volume. Thank you.

It seems your sound is completely muted. Plesae check that the volume is
turned up in either the sound volume control and preferences in the top
panel, or load up alsamixer in a terminal, adn raise the Master,
Speaker, and Headphone controls to a reasonable value.
