This bug seems to be back. Upgrade for libvte9 arrived today in Ubuntu Maverick Beta (1:0.26.0-0ubuntu1). Changelog shows this is a new upstream version of libvte9 (New upstream release v0.26.0). Seems to have fixed this bug for me. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I am unable to reproduce this issue in Maverick. Opening xfce4-terminal, I see my cpu usage at a steady 4-5%. Perhaps this was fixed with a fix to the application? I'm experimenting the same symptoms using the intel driver (high Xorg CPU usage, general unresponsiveness).
