I'm having the same problem while tryng to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 using
kpackagekit.
'E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by
held packages.'
Also tring with do-release-upgrade give me the same error.
I also tried to do a dist-upgrade after renaming
here it is the output of the command dist-upgrade, after changing lucid
in maverick in the source.list file.

I can confirm the comment in #7 works for me as a workaround (I had the
same logs files)
