I am closing the simple-scan task, because looking at the workaround/fix
it is clear that this is not a problem with simple-scan but with libsane
/sane-backends/the scanner driver and simple-scan cannot do anything
(reasonable) about this.
Solution is posted in the initial description (install
does installing iscan make it work using simple-scan or have you simply
switched to using iscan?

Fixed. I downloaded and installed iscan from the Epson website. That
fixed the problem
