Thanks for working on this. However, I can't find file vo_vdpau.c in
libvdpau source package. Could you prepare a debdiff?

Also, please include DEP3 tags in patch file.

Some update, I tried to play the movie directly with mplayer (I just found how
to launch it from the cli )
mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau theFileToPlay.mkv
I have no slowdown when subtitles appears. But it does when using
smplayer or Gnome mplayer.

I have the same bug on a Acer Aspire ( Atom processor, Nvidia Ion)
With 10.10, mplayer with vdpau is not able to read nicely 1080p x264 videos.
The same PC with 10.04 plays perfectly the videos with the subtitles.
There is a notable regression within mplayer or libvdpau.

I'm guessing this won't fix the problem entirely, but when I try to play
relatively large videos like the 1024x436 version of that Sintel movie,
I'm getting this SEGV--
VO: [vdpau] 1024x436 = 1024x436 Planar YV12
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_output_surface_create: A catch-all error, used
when
The Sintel movie can be a good test for this problem :

The Full 2048 x 872 px mp4 surround 5.1 with srt subtiles (bottom of the page)
is just fine.
After some tests, I have found this :
- Install vdpau-va-driver, configure VLC to use GPU
