Running stock 2.6.32-27-server x86_64; Lucid.
Have 2x 750 GB SATA's loaded on the orange Sil5723 ports (P5Q-E MoBo,
BIOS v.1703), but I see no sign of the controller or devices.

I did not have the problem when running 10.04/Lucid. You could try
SystemRescueCD and see whether disks are recognised then.
I have connected 4 disks to 5723. Orange ports (port 0 orange/port1
white) I have in BIOS (Drive Xpert) defined as Speed I think. In your
case the disks would show as ONE

I'm back in Qatar and Ubuntu is running. Think bug was resolved in 2.6.35.23.
When today starting up with different kernels:
2.6.35.24: Works fine
2.6.35.23: Works fine
2.6.35.22: Still does not work
Conclusion: Problem is solved.

Yes it was an issue a few days back. The PC is in Qatar and I have only had
2 days in Qatar this month. I'm in Europe and will only be able to test
