A work around is to copy the gnome.desktop in /usr/share/xsessions to
ratpoison.desktop
Change the relevant occurrences of GNOME in ratpoison.desktop to RATPOISON
Change the Exec line to Exec=/usr/bin/ratpoison

Confirming this. Debian's rationale for not including a .desktop file
doesn't apply to Ubuntu - we don't use the Debian menu system by
default.
