This is still persistent in 16.10 using a Kyocera network printer (that
is PostScript and PDF capable).
however if the png-pdf is printed using lpr everything is fine.

Example files are attached now. Please note that the print results vary
depending of the printer used. The example attached is from a Brother
DCP-9045CDN. On other printers the pixelation is less pronouced (see
description above).

Thanks. Please attach a PDF containing a graphic in PNG format that
prints poorly and another PDF containing a graphic in JPG that prints
well. If you can also attach scanned images of both printouts that
would be great.

I can confirm this also happens on Ubuntu (gnome) 10.10 on PDF files
containing text with another PDF graphic embedded (generated with
pdflatex).
