from what i can tell, we don't have this issue in gutsy anymore. If you

I think I got VLC and mplayer. I uninstalled the Totem plugin yesterday.

I have removed the VLC plugins and now I can see video.
The WMV performance is really bad, but Quicktime is doing great.

1. removing ubuntu-desktop is no problem since this is a meta package
with no contents but dependencies
2. I've installed VLC and the vlc plugin for firefox and the only thing
I get is a black window and the text (no video) great. Well not quite
what it was supposed to do.
3. This is essential
the point is that video isn't played in Firefox although about:plugins
shows plugins for the desired filetypes
