The attached xorg.conf was what Ubuntu created when enabling the proprietary nvidia drivers. Attached also the output from dmesg command. If I remove xorg.conf, the boot process completes and gdm is loaded. I am then able to log in and get a desktop without Unity. Thanks for your report, Can you please attach the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf if there's one and the output the of command dmesg.
