It's standard for files in /etc/init.d to get marked as conffiles. The
normal way to handle this is for the init script to do an early check if
the package is installed, and exit out if it is not. For instance, line
16 or so of my /etc/init.d/ssh has
test -x /usr/sbin/sshd || exit 0

The right way to fix it, would be to test if the binary for the package
exists before doing anything in the init script. Please see
/etc/init.d/ssh. The symlink getting removed only with purge option is
right though.

I think the problem is /etc/init.d/vmware-player is just getting marked
as a config file and it shouldn't. Looking at other packages, it
appears /etc/rc2*.d symlinks don't themselves get removed until purge.
