I was having this problem with an nvidia 6600GT. I haven't been able to reproduce it after downgrading to the 173 series nvidia driver, using the Additional Drivers UI. Does this work for anyone else? Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. My system also has a Geforce 7600 GS and I have this problem. I can open a video in a small window, but when the video gets big enough (either fullscreen or maximized) totem crash with BadAlloc. Additionally, I have noticed that I don't have this problem when I restart my computer, but I start having the problem when my memory use reaches too high. That is I have less then 300MB of Memory available, but all 5.5GB of Swap is still free. Interestingly thought, I switched recently from a 7600 GS AGP and an AGP mainboard over to a Geforce GT 430 PCI-E and a PCI-E mainboard, and now I can play videos (even 1080i) in fullscreen and in a maximized window without problems and no crashes at all. I've got this problem as well. NVIDIA 6800 with latest nvidia-current driver. In my case, this happens only with Unity session.
