This could be completely unrelated, but yesterday I got fed up with no sound so I used gparted to shrink my 11.04 partition, and create a 12 GB partition on which I installed Ubuntu 10.04. I tested the sound on the 10.04 partition and it works fine. Miraculously, my sound now works in my original
