Here is the amixer output for my 11.04 install. Currently the sound is
working, if/when the sound stops working I will post output of amixer
again.

Could you please run the amixer command on both Ubuntu installs, and
attach them to this bug? I'd like to compare mixer settings between both
installs. TO get the output of amixer, go into a terminal and run:
amixer ubuntu-version.txt

This could be completely unrelated, but yesterday I got fed up with no
sound so I used gparted to shrink my 11.04 partition, and create a 12 GB
partition on which I installed Ubuntu 10.04. I tested the sound on the
10.04 partition and it works fine. Miraculously, my sound now works in

UPDATE: I reported this bug after a restart failed to fix the problem. I
have now restarted my computer 3 times in a row, and I still have no
sound, when yesterday my sound worked fine all day.

Thanks for your bug report. Please open a terminal, and run the
alsamixer program. Using the left/right arrow keys, find the control
labeled External Amplifier. Once you have selected thyat control,
press the M key to turn it off. Once this is done, close alsamixer by
pressing escape.
Then test
I ran the commands and turned off External Amplifier. Then I tried
playing sound with my music player (audacity) and this command which I
found at a Ubuntu troubleshooting website : aplay
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and neither worked. After I
posted this bug I also found this post on
