Now this is weird: problem disappeared by itself. I do not recall any recent system update with obvious relation to my problem. However I removed apparmor from my system which happened to prevent cupsd from starting up. Maybe it caused also this problem as a side effect? We will never know.

Thanks for the screenshot, I agree that makes the document hard to read ;) For the standard fonts (Times, Helvetica, Courier, etc.), the replacements from the gsfonts package should be used. You seem to have the same (standard) version of gsfonts installed that I have. Maybe something is wrong
