Unable to reproduce with Thunderbird 60.9 (bionic) or 68.1.2 (eoan).
With no comments for over 8 years this issue was probably resolved a
long time ago and this bug report can now be closed. Changing status to

Check if you aren't trying to select an .otf font, thunderbird seems to
not support those. You may install a .ttf font and try to select it, to
see if it will work.
