Unfortunately I no longer use rygel, so I can't say whether things have
improved.

2018-12-03 Thread Jens Georg
Well more recent versions dropped a) the extract in an external process
and b) lowered the niceness of that process to 19 so it might be
potentially better but no one bothered to check so far.

Is that still an issue in newer versions of Ubuntu?

2012-07-06 Thread Andreas Henriksson
If you use rygel without tracker (ie. you don't have rygel-tracker
installed) then rygels mediaexport plugin will have to scan your
harddrive for media to share... How much load that creates depends on
how much media you have.

1. I don't see what the quantity of media has to do with CPU consumption.
If I have a thousand songs I expect it to take longer than if I have 100
songs, but the CPU load I expect to be the same.

2. In any case it should be made not to interfere with normal operation, as
it's a background task. E.g. run it at low priority.

[Bug 827028] Re: Uses 100% CPU after starting

2012-07-06 Thread Andreas Henriksson
1. More things to index means it takes more time to complete the
indexing. Modern power saving practices is that if you wake the CPU
up, then it should be utilized as much as possible so it can go back to
sleep as soon as possible. If you think artificial sleep calls should be
inserted in the indexing then you'll just create a less power efficient
and slower to finish indexing

2. I agree... but what you're basically saying here is that you're
stating that you don't think the linux scheduler is good enough.

Re: [Bug 827028] Re: Uses 100% CPU after starting

2012-07-06 Thread Reuben Thomas
I don't mind how long the indexing takes, as long as it doesn't make my
desktop crawl. Mpd manages this fine, as do other cpu-intensive daemons.

That you can't simply rely on the scheduler is hardly news, but equally
there are easy methods like nice that are effective. I certainly don't
advocate an ad hoc solution: on a laptop you're quite right about power
saving, but other machines may have different requirements, and it's not up
to rygel to second guess them.
