In my case, I think this bug disappeared when I changed from Unity2D to Unity3D.
So either it has been fixed (which I doubt) or it only affects Unity2D.

compositor-effects (in gconf /apps/metacity/general) _disabled_.

As discussed on IRC, I've not yet been able to reproduce this with
compiz or metacity (+compositor). It will need further investigation
what's happening on your side. I've assigned myself and put it on
Ubuntu later milestone as we're currently still very busy with bug-
fixing for unity on Oneiric.
