alt-tab between all applications (rather than windows) across all
viewports. Hopefully this change is incorporated before the final

I agree the current ALT+TAB behavior is is totally counterintuitive and
a usability regression.

This fix needs to be backported. This _regression_ ruins workspaces for
several people I know who are not technically knowledgeable enough to
compile from source. For one, multiple desktops are the primary reason
they switched to Ubuntu.

one easy workaround for this problem is to disable the Viewport Switcher in
CompizConfig and enable the Application Switcher instead. This restores the
old alt+tab behavior although it loses some feature (for example I'm not able
to jump directly to ine desktop anymore).

Alt-tab switcher now has an option to make it workspace aware as
requested. It will only show applications and windows on the current
viewport when this mode is enabled. This will land in 12.04, however is
in trunk today.
