Since upgrading to Precise this has occurred once or twice, but I cannot
find a trigger to recreate it, and I have put it into standby regularly
to try and recreate.. I'll let this bug expire and if it occurs again
I'll see if I can find any logs that may offer a clue.

Please expand upon your statement, to be powered on except the
monitor. What specifically is leading you to this conclusion?
One possible scenario is (as you seem to be suggesting) that this is
just a graphics problem, and that otherwise your machine is functional.
