Just would like to chime in that I also am having this issue. My Asus EEE 1010HAB netbook has a max resolution as detected of 1024x600, but I would use xrandr to stretch the size of my desktop, with amazing results, in Ubuntu 11.04, with no problems whatsoever, using the following command:
