I'll chime in to say that I'm getting this error (or at least one indistiguishable from it from the symptoms and /var/log/jockey.log) on a clean 12.04 install. kernel is 32-bit PAE. I have a AMD Radeon 6900 Series and I was getting this error with the identical log. I don't know what this fix is supposed to be, but like in comment 40, this ATI/AMD FGLRX post-release updates still doesn't work using Ubuntu 12.04 beta 2 fully updated as of today and rebooted before running jockey. Attached is the jockey.log from the failed installation. Doesn't work for me. I don't believe the fglrx installer failure is a bug in nvidia-common, but rather in the interface between jockey-common and fglrx-updates. It looks like /usr/share/jockey/handlers/fglrx.py in package jockey- common expects the package fgrlx-updates to create a module named 'fglrx-updates', but the module generated by building that package is actually named 'fglrx'. The proposed fixes do not work for me either. The original Jockey made an effort on installation and failed after ~ a minute and returned with these errors: 2012-02-16 10:37:29,631 WARNING: /sys/module/fglrx_updates/drivers does not exist, cannot rebind fglrx_updates driver 2012-02-16 10:37:29,907 ERROR: xorg:fglrx_updates: get_alternative_by_name(fglrx-updates) returned nothing The proposed one fails after a second. Hugh Redelmeier (except my Oneiric is updated from Natty) and I agree with Him in the followings : Is your proposed fix to nvidia-common supposed to fix jockey's handling of installing proprietary AMD drivers (fglrx)? That seems rather counter-intuitive. I have a fresh AMD64 installation of Oneiric, plus all updates (but no -proposed). Jockey fails with the message sorry installation of this driver failed please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log. I have no nVidia hardware. For me, the new version doesn't work either. Actually, the graphics are best with all additional drivers deactivated. @Martin: yes, that would definitely be easier and probably best for the SRU but, with the current implementation, I think (at least for Precise), we have a standard way to deal with this problem in the API. Alberto: The nvidia-common API change looks unnecessary to me. The new
second argument just modifies the first one. Wouldn't it be easier to

Hmmm --- I have installed manually it: fglrx-amdcccle-updates 2:8.881-0ubuntu6.1 fglrx-updates 2:8.881-0ubuntu6.1 (and still additional drivers says that it's not activated). Maybe it's expecting a module called fglrx-updates when the module is called simply fglrx? (wild guess). The first relevant WARNING in jockey.log file is: : modinfo for module fglrx_updates failed: ERROR: modinfo: could not find module fglrx_updates hmmm? The module I have installed says it's a 11.9 (is this correct?)
