Unity supports a minimal resolution of 1024*600 you are using it at
800*600 hence seeing the problem. I believe your netbook does support
1024*768 for horizontal orientation(?)

You said that it occurs only when you connect an external display. When
no display is connected, then do you have the issue? Or do all icons
come properly sized?

I recently update my ubuntu version from 11.04 to 11.10. Everything
looks working fine. The only problem, by now, is when I press the Start
