[Bug 875543] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2500] Can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2020-03-12 Thread Stephen Allen
I have this problem too. It can also be a mechanical problem, which in
my case I believe it is as the above commands all do what ejecting
manually via the button does. The rubber band driving the pulley to open
the door do wear out and need to be replaced. Since the price of DVD
drives has plummeted in recent years, it appears they are made more
cheaply.

The door wants to open, it just can't because of the pulley band
slipping due to wear and tear.

2017-08-07 Thread Jim Caughran
I have an on and off workaround: leave a blank cd in the drive when you
don't need the drive.

Here's one that worked on the second try:

jim@Quandry:~$ eject
eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device
jim@Quandry:~$ eject -v
eject: using default device `cdrom'
eject: device name is `cdrom'
eject: expanded name is `/dev/cdrom'
eject: `/dev/cdrom' is a link to `/dev/sr0'
eject: `/dev/sr0' is not mounted
eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a mount point
eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a multipartition device
eject: trying to eject `/dev/sr0' using CD-ROM eject command
eject: CD-ROM eject command succeeded

2015-08-01 Thread Dhruv Upreti
I am facing this issue in Ubuntu 15.04 ( fresh installation on AMD Qaud
Core) as well. I have tried almost all the commands available on google
for this issue but no luck

$ eject /dev/sr0
$ eject -rv $ sudo eject /dev/sr0
$ file /dev/sr0 /dev/sr0: block special (11/0)
$ sudo eject -i off $ eject -i off /dev/cdrom
$ eject -v /dev/sr0 eject: device name is /dev/sr0'
eject: expanded name is/dev/sr0'
eject: /dev/sr0' is not mounted
eject:/dev/sr0' is not a mount point
eject: /dev/sr0' is not a multipartition device
eject: trying to eject/dev/sr0' using CD-ROM eject command
eject: CD-ROM eject command succeeded

Surprsingly they do not give any errors also

I have also confirmed that CD ROM is detected by ubuntu
$ sudo lshw -C disk *-cdrom
description:
DVD-RAM writer product: DVDRAM GH24NSC0 vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 0.1.0 bus
info: scsi@1:0.1.0 logical name: /dev/cdrom logical name: /dev/cdrw logical
name: /dev/dvd logical name: /dev/dvdrw logical name: /dev/sr0 version: LK00
capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram configuration:
ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

Does any one has anything else for trying ?

[Bug 875543] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2500] Can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2013-10-26 Thread LindseyD.
Apologies for the delay in replying. I have to say, all this is a
nightmare on dialup. Launchpad alone can take up to 5 minutes to load.

I managed to track down the Natty udev, but it requires the
upgrade/installation of 24 dependencies--too much of a risk of breaking
something else for me to try it. Same with installing another kernel.
(And if the problem's in udev, why change the kernel?)

Maurice, as I understand it # means you're already root so I don't quite
understand # sudo eject -i off. However, I su'd into root and tried #
eject -i off and it worked, but only once :-(

I will not be opening a new report, because a) Linux Mint isn't on the
dropdown list of affects other distributions and b) because I have no
idea now whether it's a udev bug or a kernel bug and c) all the report
would say is, see bug 875543 for details. I haven't got the resources in
terms of spare computers or high speed internet access to pursue this on
my own. The only reason I posted above was, the bug was set to expire
unless someone said something. However, if anyone else has the physical
and emotional resources to open a new report, I'd like to know about it.

[Bug 875543] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2500] Can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2013-10-20 Thread Maurice McCarthy
Archlinux appear to have fixed a similar fault 2 years ago, most of the
work was taken from Fedora but they had to further patch it themselves.
(Apologies I'm not a programmer so I can only give pointers not fixes.)

[Bug 875543] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2500] Can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2013-10-18 Thread LindseyD.
I just tried with LinuxMint 15 on a USB stick and the problem persists.
Has anyone found a solution that doesn't require upgrading one's entire
system?

[Bug 875543] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2500] Can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2013-10-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
frenchy82, the issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop ISO of the
development release - Saucy Salamander. It would help us greatly if you
could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next
release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release
at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . Thanks again and we
appreciate your help.
