the open with tab) which seems a gtk issue and has been sent to

Ok, I just looked at the issue, gtk correctly filters out the .desktop
which doesn't claim to support command line argument in their Exec line

softwares that don't take a command line argument should be filtered out

confirmed, abiword.desktop has Exec=abiword, adding a %U to it,
running sudo update-desktop-database and restarting nautilus should
workaround it
