Public bug reported:

Xubuntu 11.04. Calibre is unable to dependably convert epub to mobi.
Calibre (Windows XP version same computer different OS) was able to
convert the very same documents. The following is what I got at the end
of a failed conversion. It also happened in pdf to mobi.

I upgraded to the latest Calibre (0.8.27) on the Calibre website using the bin
which had all the dependencies. Again the same problem arose. I tried another
PDF file and attempted to convert it to Mobi. It failed when the html file was
being converted to mobi. Under Windows XP Calibre did convert however. It
seems that Calibre converts to html before it converts to another format.
