Public bug reported: Sound was working on this machine prior to switching to use the kubuntu plasma desktop and opening the sound configuration in phonon to see if I could fix a low volume issue fixes. Adding the suggested line from several forum posts for intel hda in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, use of the command line alsamixer and a shutdown/restart seemed to have corrected it but after a reboot a couple days later I had no audio devices detected at all.
