Ok for anyone landing in this situation (f.e. by trying to `checkinstall --fstrans=no ./vmware-product.bundle` ).. a probable cause is that checkinstall has removed the /lib -> /usr/lib symlink and replaced it by a directory. Lucky you if you have a tmux session with a root ranger instance
