I had the same problem until I turned off crossfading (Edit -
Preferences, Playback tab, uncheck Crossfade between tracks).
Crossfading never worked with MP3s, so no big loss.

this may be some sort of sound conflict with xchat notifications (using
aoss) as I noticed in lsof | grep snd that xchat was using the sound system
and once it was removed and rhythmbox restarted, the sound returned. So
it's some sort of blocking that's going on between the two.
