Public bug reported:

I have an ASUS K53E laptop dual-booted with Win7 and Ubuntu 11.04. After
trying several methods to enable multitouch gestures like two-finger
scrolling on 11.04, I came to the conclusion that apparently, my
touchpad is being recognized as a PS/2 mouse. And hence I couldn't see
the touchpad tab in the System Settings>Mouse.

Here's the output of the 'xinput list' command in 11.04:

parth@parth-K53E:~$ xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PS/2 Generic Mouse id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ USB 2.0 Camera id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]

But recently I tried to boot 12.04 off a live cd (actually a thumb
drive), the trackpad worked. I can now see the touchpad tab in System
Settings>Mouse. Here's is the output of the xinput list command:

parth@parth-K53E:~$ xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad id=12 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ USB 2.0 Camera id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Asus WMI hotkeys id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]
