It's not a problem anymore since the nouveau driver is enabled by
default - dmesg says:

nvidia-current and nvidia-settings fails to install automatically

The problem is still there - now the system didn't boot into graphical mode
after a couple of boots -
the logging output is the same attached at #4 and #5
Purging, reinstalling and rebooting seem to help. Let's see how this
problem changes with 12.04.

The problem didn't occur with the most current update.
I ran aptitude safe-upgrade and nvidia-current was marked as
upgradeable.
nvidia-current 295.33-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 = 295.40-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1
nvidia-settings 295.33-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 = 295.40-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1
The same happened again with the most current kernel: 3.0.0-17-generic.
After:
* aptitutde remove nvidia-current nvidia-settings
* aptitutde install nvidia-current nvidia-settings
* reboot
the system is up'n'running again.
