I had this issue following an update. Turns out my .Xauthority file was
600 root:root. I gave it back to my user and was able to log in ok.
Looks like something caused root to claim sole ownership.

Could you add your .xsession-errors as well? The lightdm log suggests
the session is correctly started from lightdm but exit later on
