I ran the suggested test and added i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 to the kernel
boot parameters, but it had no effect. The issue is not resolved. With
disabled RC6 the behaviour is exactly the same like with enabled one.

Could you also test if Unity 2D will work around this bug? There are

How should it? The purple screen appears immediatly after grub. I don't
see any plymouth, I even don't see any text messages or blinking cursor.
Only a dead purple screen. I don't get to lightdm, I cant't get to
another tty, so how should I test unity2D? I would be happy to at least
get to a shell
Thanks for the update, Dirschi.
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.3
kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the
Thanks for your efforts and advices, Joseph!
I did apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade a few minutes ago and with
these updates a new kernel landed, I think it was linux generic
3.2.0-20.33.
I rebooted and the problem did not exist anymore!!!
I don't know what it fixed, but the last updates
I think this may have been a duplicate of bug 961482, which was fixed in
today's updates.

purple screen and hang at boot after upgrading
When I start the system the POST is passed and then grub2 should be
loaded, but this does not happen. Even if I press the shift-key there is
no message grub is loading Instead I get to a purple screen like
described above. If I reboot after this, grub is loaded. If I select the
3.2.0-20 kernel
When you reach the purple screen, are you able to switch to another tty,
which can be done by pressing CTRL + ALT and F1?
If you can do that, please run the following from that tty:

No, I am not able to switch to another tty. The system shows no reaction
to keyboard inputs. I tried to shut down the system with SysRq-Keys
(SysRq + REISUB), but no reaction. The only way out is the power-button.
