I had the same problem. I installed Feisty Beta, yesterday, 27 March 2007 and all worked fine. Then I applied the updates (92 at the time) and rebooted. When gdm should have started I just got a blank screen. I have the nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200. A little OT question (maybe stuff for another bug): switching from nv to nvidia driver I used the dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg command. It seems that this command resets the XkbLayout option to us instead the previous it - Italian keyboard layout - ingoring the system locale too. it seems that the driver/server did indeed hang.. this is the last line from the log: (==) NV(0): Write-combining range (0xd000,0x800) We have a permission to a new driver version (2.0). When it is uploaded you can try again. Just upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-nv-2.0-0ubuntu2 and I have the same behaviour.
