I'd like to share a 3 hours hint success here, because I used the
keywords ubuntu logout bug and went through here during my search,
athough this is a different issue.
My answer was here: .Xauthority sometimes owned by root, which blocks login
After last set of updates today, the problem has gone away. I have
restarted several times and unity-greeter does not crash. I did notice
however, that the background image of the selected user comes up in
unity-greeter if it is a static image. If it is a changing image, you
get the default
unity-greeter (0.2.7-0ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

- Pressing escape key on lightdm greeter restarts xserver

- unity-greeter crashed with SIGSEGV in background_loader_ready_cb

Very bad experience here:
- made a fresh install of Precise i386 via unetbootin mini-iso
- so its the default installation
- but i'm unable to login as my user, only guest is accepted
- restarted as recovery, check for broken packages, then open a session as
root
- cant install package : unable
It seems that this bug is user-specific.
If I try to log in as the main user then I see an endless loop of unity-
greeter restarting.
If I am able to change the user to my test user then I can log in as
normally.

If you change the unity-greeter to another user without it crashing
(continually hitting up and down arrows while unity-greeter is
crashing), you can change back to your normal user and log in as normal.
Loging out will cause the problems to recommence.

I am seeing this (or similar?) problem on an acer aspire One.
Problem seems to occur for me when logging out of one users account before
logging into second users account.
The restarting unity-greeter can _eventually_ be stopped by pressing an arrow
key to select the other user.

(while unity-greeter is continually crashing and restarting) to try to
cycle between usual user, another user and the guest session will
eventually cause the unity-greeter to stop crashing, and allow the user
to log in as usual

boot in recovery mode then
sudo dpkg -- remove ubuntu-desktop
sudo dpkg --remove lightdm
Then after a reboot I am able to login using gdm

Or
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
and select gdm instead of lightdm. This leaves ubuntu-desktop in place
to be able to do what it's mean to.

I'm going to mark this as also affects me as I've also experienced
this bug twice this week.
The screen refresh make it impossible to log in and I cannot switch to a
tty to kill lightdm.
I'm now using gdm as my system is unusable with lightdm due to this
bug.

Exactly - I installed ssh server and remotely logged in to kill lightdm
- much easier. With ssh -X, you can remotely use windows.
