I am experiencing the same issue right now with Firefox 23, but I am sure it
was working fine one or two firefox updates earlier...
I have noticed also that Firefox tries to open .doc files with gedit, but .docx
file are associated correctly with Libreoffice and work fine.

This may be solved by upgrading to a newer version of Firefox because I tried
to recreate your bug and was not able. I have Firefox 19 though so you may want
to just upgrade and it will choose libraoffice.

Yep, tested this again and Libreoffice correctly opens the document from
Firefox 19. I don't know which version actually fixed the issue, but
this bug report can probably be closed now.
