Seems to be fixed with a newer release, and Hardy has one. Closing the
bug.

I just upgraded to gutsy. With the stock fglrx (8.37) this black screen of
death happens just like before (i.e., machine freezes, becomes unresponsive
even to ssh from the outside).
Things work only after installing the 8.40.4 driver from ATI.

With Gutsy and stock fglrx 8.37 installed I don't have the initial issue
reported of X not loading.
For others, is this just a black/blank screen for the initial startup of
X? This I have, but it goes away after 3 seconds or so and gdm loads
fine.
Or does the X server never fully load as the init
Added linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) as affected because it's
still occurring with updates to the current date.

You
Confirm it works fine in 8.40.4 on Feisty.
Maybe I will hold off on gutsy until its graphics driver gets upgraded
accordingly..

This bug seems resolved with the latest 8.38.6 fglrx driver. It worked
on my Asus A6va laptop

controller: 1002:5653 / ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X700
(PCIE)).

To compile 8.28.8 on 2.6.20 I had to copy asm/unistd.h from older kernel
and replace in firegl_public.c linux/config.h with linux/utsrelease.h.
Now I have 3daccel, but only with X 7.1 (all xserver-xorg packages are
holded). This is a dirty hack, but I works for me. I hope, ati will make
next driver
Since 8.28.8 doesn't work with Xorg 7.2 i had to downgrade it to 7.1 in
order to use fglrx. This bug seems to be only on mobility radeon x700
(m26) chips.

It is not a MonitorLayout bug, i am sure ;)
I have no idea if this problem is corrected with 8.35.5, but i really don't
think it is.
