[Bug 992523] Re: [VIA8237 - VIA 8237, playback] No sound at all
I have the same sound card. It works fantastic with Ubuntu 6.06, but I get no sound from 12.04. I'm keeping myself in a partially configured limbo mode (via expert and server modes), and attempting to figure out why one version would work, but not another. alsa-utils, in 6.06 has asoundconf, but 12.04 doesn't. But I carried just that file forward but still haven't found the magic. If I try to start an application, it tells me it can't find a sound card. (This is an overview post: I have been collecting lots of output from both Ubuntu 6.06 and 12.04, hoping to meet in the middle. Example: Comparing dpkg -l differences between versions. Data will be available to you if needed). I'm carefully examining the actions in this post, and may find my own answer. My question is more general: What's different between v6 and v12? Your volume looks really low. [Bug 992523] Re: [VIA8237 - VIA 8237, playback] No sound at all
The setup works quite happily with the volume set to that level - much higher introduces distortion into the active speaker system. I have found that running movieplayer leads movieplayer crashing at startup and this leaves the audio system in an inoperable state. If I reboot the system I can then use the audio happily until movieplayer scres it again. This bug I thought was launched my movieplayer crashing! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/992523 Title: [VIA8237 - VIA 8237, playback] No sound at all To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/992523/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If you run the following command after movieplayer crashes, do you get sound back? sudo killall totem It might also be helpful to show terminal output by starting totem from terminal.
