When within a virtual box, all keypresses belong to the virtual machine.
To gain access to the host OS, you normally have to press the defined
Host-key in virtual box.

E.g. if you switch windows within a virtual Windows OS inside Virtual
box, your Alt-Tab directly goes to Windows.

Now, with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS a single <Alt> keypress which also MUST stay
within VirtualBox instead opens the lenses menu search function.

It shouldn't. It's massive distractive and not the expected behavior.
