2014-03-06 Thread Ahmed Ibrahim
I had the same problem over and over on Ubuntu and it hangs for serveral
applications even the HTML browner during opeining a URL. BUT .. I had a
solution in my case: I release the memory allocation using the following
command .

sudo sync echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

I just want to say that this lock is not happening in case of large
memory allocation, it is even after a short restart of my machine and
starting more than one server.

Runing this command is immediatly release this lock in my case.

[Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently

2013-06-12 Thread Ray Perigo
Also occurring on my laptop - Acer Aspire 5560-sb613, AMD A8-3500M with
Radeon 6620G. Has occurred on 12.04 through 13.04, both 32 and 64 bit
systems. Occurs regardless of whether I'm using FGLRX or the xorg-radeon
driver. Can't recall whether it was alleviated by running a 2D desktop.
I'll get XFCE installed later and see how that works.

Note: I've run at least 6 passes of memtest on this machine, as well as
replaced the RAM. No change. Oddly, my desktop is totally bulletproof
(AMD FX-63xx, 990FX chipset, NV 650ti).

Some guy above mentioned problems connecting to wireless right before
the freeze. Could be related? My laptop's always been odd with wifi.

For what It's worth, my laptop has a Broadcom BCM-43227 LP-PHY card,
using the bcmwl driver (b43 has no support for the chip). Desktop has a
cheap TP-Link USB dongle with an Atheros chip.

2013-02-24 Thread Paul_L
I am having the same hanging problem. Mouse works but machien accepts no
mouse clicks or keyboard commands. If I reboot by pressing the power
button bios occassionally reports no keyboard and I have to wait a
minute before rebooting.

If it helps - I have power settings to go into standby after 10 mins. If
the machine has hung and I leave it then it will allow me to login to
come out of standby but the machine will then very soon go into a full
lock up (after 2 0r 3 minutes use)

Foxconn A6GMV with 3 core AMD processor
4MB RAM
Ubuntu 12.04

Problem only appeared after upgrade to 12.04. Previous motherboard used
to blue screen and I upgraded it. Now no blue screens but I get the
hanging issue. I have noticed like the earlier post that scrolling up
and down with the mouse wheel in firefox or Chrome can bring on the
hang.

[Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently

2012-09-06 Thread 01es
We have the described problem with several of our machines in the lab.
However, some of the machines (identical in hardware to those freezing)
did not have the freezing issue.

Installing the 3.3.x kernel did not help at all. So, we've started
analysing what might be the cause of the problem. At the beginning
everything was suggesting that if the RAM was fully loaded and there was
an intensive use of the swap the machine would freeze. This was a
repeatable experiment, but only for the machines that were freezing in
the first place.

The only obvious difference in software on those machines was the user
of Chromium on those that freezed and Firefox on those that did not. The
memory stress tests we've performed where using Chromium with multiple
tabs (each tab process consuming ~50Mb). Once we repeated the tests
without Chromium and using Firefox instead no freezing occurred! In
order to further pinpoint the issue we've used one of our JavaFX
applications that utilises WebKit for working with Google Maps and the
freezing manifested again.

Thus, all our tests point to the cause of the freezing to be related to
WebKit engine. Hope this information is useful and someone would be able
to repeat the experiments in other settings to confirm the result.

[Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently

2012-07-13 Thread Hein
On my Acer Laptop 7520 / AMD Turion / 2 Gb Ram/ Nividia graphics w
shared mem Ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes: only the mouse cursor keeps
moving. Hard reset is the only way out. The problem seems to be related
somehow to screen output: if I don't touch my system it keeps running.
If I start browsing (lots of rendering) or play videos the system
freezes almost instantly. Just running some programs that are less heavy
on screen output do eventually cause a freeze, but it definitely takes
longer. Nonetheless 12.04 is not suitable for production purposes:
several freezes per (working) day is alpha level!

I reported this bug earlier under # 993187. Somehow it seems that no
developer is willing to pick up this bug. I'ts unclear what package
causes these freezes. As freezes appear on a very wide range of systems,
it seems to me that is must be in some package that is common on a wide
range of machines, so probably not Nvidia drivers or other specific
hardware related stuff like Ivy bridge etc. I do not have another system
to test Ubuntu 12.04 with. I also have a netbook, but my SSD is too
small for installing 12.04 with unity onto it. Does anybody have a
second system: does it run there smoothly or not? It seems so widespread
that I wonder if it can be reproduced on a wide range of systems.

For some it seems that a kernel update (or downgrade) is working.
Perhaps it's worthwhile looking into the differences between those
kernels in relation to screen output. Which screen related parts have
changed? As 11.10 runs very smooth on my system perhaps a comparison
between the kernel in 11.10 and 12.04 (just for screen output related
parts) would help.

I haven't tried Ubuntu 12.04 lately: I need my system for daily work, so
I'm back on 11.10. I have tried an alternative kernel before with little
effect (freezing occurred less frequent, but still occurred too often).
I don't now if my system would run more reliable with other kernels. As
I explained before I need my laptop for daily work and don't want to run
into trouble again with 12.04. I'm considering to wait for 12.10 and
wait until XMas holiday to try it and keep my fingers crossed that the
problem will be gone with 12.10. Does anyone who has trouble with 12.04
try 12.10 alpha or beta version yet?

[Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently

2012-07-10 Thread Michael Helsvig
After the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04, there are daily freezes for no
apparent reason; One freeze can come after a fresh boot with no open
programs - and another freeze can come five hours after working with
many programs. There is never a single action, that causes a freeze. To
the user, it comes at random.

There has not been any problems like this in any version of Ubuntu on
the same hardware. Every freeze is a complete lock up of the system with
sudden squared garbage all over the screen. Not even the mouse nor
keyboard responds. It has not been possible to find any errors, prior to
a freeze, in the system log.

Could it be related to a background process, such as the encrypted file
system option (eCryptfs)?

The version of Ubuntu is 32 bit 12.04 LTS. The kernel is 3.2.0-26
-generic-pae. The version of Gnome is 3.4.1. The processor is Intel Core
i5-2500 3.30 Ghz x4. The graphics adaptor is the Intel Sandybridge
Desktop x86/MMX/SSE2.

I have tested this and it is related to Debian Code. I have found it to
happen with all distros including Mint 13 and Ubuntu 12.04. The only
distro that I found works properly is Fedora Core 17 it has not locked
up yet. I have had the lockups all three Video cards manufacturers.
Intel 4000, Nvidia 240 and ATI graphics. It can be totally random and
this issue is critical. I cannot believe Ubuntu is not looking in to
this and this case has not be assigned to anyone yet. Totally
unprofessional

2012-06-01 Thread Tristan
Yesterday Ubuntu froze on me too.

I was just doing some internetting, when the whole screen froze and i wasn't
able to do anything, the solution was to reset. Also the the laptop seemed not
to do anything (the hard drive led wasn't flicking).
I'm running ubuntu 12.04 in 3D mode.

Kernel: 3.2.0.24.26
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2330M CPU @ 2.20GHz
video card:ATI RADEON grapphics HD 6470m 1Gb
ram: 4Gb
Video driver: X.org ATI fglrx 2:8.960

I've did a search around on google and noticed that a lot of RADEON
video cards suffer from this problem. Maybe the driver could be the
cause?

[Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently

2012-05-27 Thread Joris V.
Can't believe this is on invalid! I got an MSI EX600 machine, which I
have been using Ubuntu on since 9.10 without major hick-ups.

I have _switched_ from Ubuntu to Fedora now, since this bug really makes
the system unworkable. There is nothing written in logs when this
happens, although I know a way to fully reproduce the crash.

Open your webbrowser and point to a resource-intensive website, like
www.eurogamer.net. Click on one of the reviews or digital foundry face-
offs. Now just scroll up and down. You'll notice that from time to time
the browser screen refresh seems to hang just an instant. Continue to
scroll up and down. You would be very lucky if the momentary hang
doesn't result in a full lock-up after a few occurances.

This bug is 100% reproducable. Since you can not work on the system for
more than half an hour, Ubuntu becomes plain unusable, which is a shame.

This happens on a fully clean install. With or without updating Nvidia
drivers.

Don't dismiss this. The bug is here, reproducable, blocking.

[Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently

2012-05-20 Thread Salomon van Huyssteen
Hi, this is not a display or xorg bug, see Bug #993187 (ubuntu 12.04
64bit completely freezes frequently). It seems to be a bug in the
current kernel and they suggest a fix by Installing Linux 3.3.6 kernel.
See comment #91.

Regards,
S

while your symptoms sound similar, you're likely experiencing an
unrelated issue. Please file a new bug for it using the command
'ubuntu-bug xorg' (and a photo if any corruption is seen).

2012-05-15 Thread Ubuntu Warrior
OK I tried MemTest and the option came up when I booted holding the ESC key but
when I select MemTest is give an error: Command 'Linux 16' not recognized.
I switched from Cinnamon DE to Classic Gnome. So far I have not had freezes
like before but I am getting a lot of error messages which direct me to report
the error to Ubuntu which I did (I got about 4 error messages in quick
succession)

2012-05-15 Thread Stephen Conklin
And yes, the pointer can be moved, but it frequently freezes again. I've had 2
instances where Ubuntu recovered briefly.
As to whether or not it happens in Unity 2D, I'm not sure. I rarely use
anything but Unity 3D. However, I will see if it does happen in 2D, but, it
seems to happen sporadically. I don't really have a procedure to reproduce the
conditions; it seems to do it when it feels like it, if that makes ANY sense.

Any reason I can't run Memtest- what is this Linux 16 error message about (is
it because I have 16 GB of RAM?)?

you are using NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 295.40 that is
broken, it is already fixed but under testing in these days. So you can use
unity-2D or unity-3D but disabling the proprietary driver. bug 982710

Please open a new report typing in terminal
ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel

So I close this report because there's nothing to do.
Feels free to report any other issue you may find.

Okay, I switched to the recommended NVIDIA driver, the current version,
and so far (knock on wood), Ubuntu hasn't frozen once, and I've been on
this session for well over 3 hours. So, it is the updated version of
the NVIDIA driver that was to blame, or so it seems.
