Follow-up: I deleted all my Gnome/Unity/Compiz-related settings (a long
time ago) from a tty and everything is back to normal. If I recall
correctly, updating to Unity 5.12 didn't fix anything.

I have the same symptoms. Unlike Alexandros, unity --replace or compiz
--replace does not fix the problem. Unity runs fine in another account.
Unity 5.12 did not fix this for me.

Alexandros, it sounds like you might have been suffering from one of the
Unity crashes that was fixed recently in Unity 5.12. Could you please do
a software update to test 5.12?

When I recently logged into Ubuntu, I noticed that the Unity launcher
and panel did not appear at all and only my wallpaper and my desktop
icons were visible on screen. Thanks to the fact that I had nautilus-
open-terminal installed, I managed to fire up a terminal
