The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released. Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. I am having this same exact issue with 2 HP Vectra PCs (2000 vintage) and 2 of these have the Mitsumi CD-ROM drives. the show up as [ 60.685005] ata2.00: ATAPI: FX4830T, R02C, max UDMA/33 in dmesg. I have tried acpi=off noapic but no help. Here are the attachments this currently with acpi=off noapic I can remove these settings and send you a new set of attachments. I can confirm: Fiesty 7.04 2.6.20-16-386 CD-ROM: Mitsumi FX4830T CD-ROM can run Knoppix w/no problems. However, attempts to install from the Feisty Alternate CD halts with/no CD-ROM found etc. Brought up a spare hard drive w/Feistly already installed and it does not find the CD-ROM drive. More testing revealed that 1) the problem still persists with Gutsy's linux-image-2.6.22-5-generic and 2) the problem is probably caused by the CD-ROM firmware, replacing the Mitsumi drive with a Plextor drive fixed the problem: the Plextor was correctly detected as CD-ROM, whereas the Mitsumi is always detected as a non-removable harddisk.
