OK. I found the upstream bug on this. Please note that -- per upstream
-- this is still open. The issue stems from a *non-working* DNS at the
time NTP is triggered (most probably on boot).
This is why, when you are up running, you do not see this error.
Please see the upstream bug for details.
i386 proved to be unreliable; couldn't even complete the lucid install.
Now have built an amd64 system, but am using full-disk encryption and
cannot even boot the system to the point where I can attempt to install
Chuck Short's PPA. Still trying...

The problem was pretty clearly related to the file
/usr/bin/nmblookup.samba3 not being present. Indeed, after installing
samba-common-bin with aptitude / apt-get (which always failed, as

After a recent update to the Ambiance theme, terminals now have a
translucent background.
This greatly hinders the readability of text, especially if there are
sharp features behind the terminal and the Compiz blur plugin

Adopting from #226484 (now a duplicate of this one):
This is a bug with mdadm --incremental not doing hotplug, because it
looks for permission to do so in mdadm.conf.
On hotplug systems mdadm.conf should not have to contain any specific
references, to make things clear and for backwards
