I did some further digging on this and it appears that it only happens
when the virtual machine definition includes a floppy device, either via
-drive or -fda. Removal of the floppy device results in being able to
successfully boot and install Windows XP. However, this does seem to
prevent one

I have tried the latest 3.7-rc3 kernel too , but even this one fails.

Disabling download of MIME parts on demand may work around this issue -
could some of you try setting the advanced preference
mail.imap.mime_parts_on_demand
to false, restart Thunderbird, and see if the problem goes away?
